Abstract

In the last ten years, Catalan stages have experienced a new presence of text theater. A whole ‘generation’ of new local playwrights has been established, and the importance and prestige of theater in public life in Catalonia has grown significantly. These developments raise the question of how the problems and conflicts of the surrounding society are reflected in contemporary theater. The article proposes an analysis of Narcís Comadira's L'hora dels adéus as a work of social commitment especially critical of the officially propagated models of Catalan identity, which formulates a vision of cultural and linguistic mixture, as an alternative to a country determined by a “past that doesn’t happen”. The last part of the article contrasts the provocative potential of this dramatic text with its rather inoffensive staging at the Romea theater in Barcelona.
